Position Summary
We are looking for a collaborative Environmental Health and Safety Specialist who will use a proactive approach to improve processes and reduce risk in support of our EHS System.  The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is to act as subject matter expert and is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring EHS policies, procedures, and supporting activities to ensure that the STERIS complies with all applicable regulations at our MN Campus buildings.

This position will also support cross divisional initiatives requiring collaboration with cross divisional teams, thinking strategically at a global level, and may involve non routine travel. This role has opportunity for occasional involvement with rolling out global initiatives beyond implementation and continuing to be the global subject matter expert for the software, training, and/or program implemented.  

Pro-actively work to reduce workplace injury frequency and severity rates, identifying opportunities for continuous improvement and spearhead projects and initiatives, including leadership of small teams.
Drive development, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of the EHS programs ensuring compliance with Federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
Provide EHS support to area Mangers, Supervisors, Leads across all areas/shifts. 
Ability to work independently and adjust schedule as business priorities shift.
Manage and track completion of safety improvements and post-accident corrective actions. 
Support EHS speak up culture by being actively visible across all functional areas and engage in regular communication with employees at all levels of the organization.

Duties – cont’d

Participate in or lead internal and external EHS related audits such as FM Global and regulatory inspections such as OSHA.
Maintain and track EHS records including but not limited to corrective actions, audit actions, training, industrial hygiene, and environmental.  
Act as incident command or support, as appropriate, for emergency response situations.
Actively participate and provide guidance to building EHS Sub-Team.
Maintain compliance systems/programs including but not limited to Safety Data sheets, PPE, program updates and reporting. Oversees and leads all aspects of EH&S training for new and existing employees.
Perform or lead collection of Industrial Hygiene sampling.
Oversee development of technical documents including EHS procedures, programs, and guidance documents. Work with department to ensure programs, procedures, and work instructions are current and followed by employees.
Oversee all aspects of EHS training including development, implementation, and maintenance of programs and training plans as well as ability to provide in person training.
Coordinates and provides support in review of new equipment in the specifications of safety controls.
Assist in management of Environmental Permits including but not limited to: Hazardous Waste, Stormwater, Tier II, and Industrial Discharge

Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering with specialization in Ergonomics, or related field.
4+ years of experience working in relevant field.
Familiarity with OSHA, ANSI, EPA, and NFPA, ISO.

Preferred Experience

Master’s degree and/or ASP, CSP, or OHST certification preferred.
1+ years’ experience working in a 24-hour manufacturing environment or medical devices is preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, together with strong organizational skills, prioritization and attention to detail.
Ability to develop strong relationships built on trust with employees at all levels.
Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability.
Proven ability to adapt to setbacks, adversity and diversity.
Motivated self-starter with ability to work independently or with others in cross-functional project teams.
Work cross functionally to fully engage employees, contractors and vendors in the EHS process, expectations, and requirements.
