This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Mechanical Engineer (Buildings) for our Richmond, VA office.  Be involved in projects with our Buildings Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges. 
This role will actively participate in the full project cycle with a focus on healthcare projects from the design phase through the final construction close-out. Our Engineers work on high quality, high-profile, national and international projects with our practice providing design services for over 30 million square feet of medical facilities.

Your Impact

Perform professional mechanical engineering work for proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, building, usage, and mechanical systems.
Provide technical assistance for various engineering and design projects relating to automatic temperature control systems and specifications, air distribution (supply, return, exhaust), hydronic systems (chilled water, heating water, etc.) and plumbing systems (domestic water, waste, vent, storm, etc.). 
Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work, assist with laying out installation of equipment, calculating costs and quantities of material/equipment/labor, and ensuring project work conforms with specifications.
Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate and precise measurements and calculations, statistical analysis, and reporting.
Assist with project management, development and scoping of small- to medium-sized projects including construction administration and attending client meetings.
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to address design and/or construction issues or problems. 
Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular design and construction problem or issue and/or to plan for future needs.
Work collaboratively with other engineers and planners on projects with building and infrastructure authorities on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvement and development projects.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.


Who You Are
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
1 to 3 years of relevant post education experience designing mechanical systems for the built environment including experience with the design of HVAC systems and automatic temperature controls for a broad range of commercial systems.
Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to project work-related issues. 
Experience with building planning and design from the design phase through final construction closeout including rehabilitation and new design.
Knowledge of relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to organize and present design information to clients.
Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
Experience with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD).
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge.
Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.


Preferred Qualifications:

Engineer in Training Certification.
Experience with lab and healthcare projects.
