WSP is currently initiating a search for a Director, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) our New York – One Penn Plaza office. Be involved in projects with our Power & Energy Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Provides Health and Safety (H&S) program leadership within a sector of organization to ensure programs are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry and company standards. Responsible for H&S innovation and administration in the energy business sector and on programs/projects; ensuring corporate compliance with all Local, State, and Federal health and safety regulations; and providing pragmatic direction to address current and future H&S challenges in a rapidly-changing and complex business environment.
Provide proactive and strategic leadership for the design, documentation, and administration of the business sector’s HSE program and policies, offering direction and support to ensure project/work site safety and promote a strong safety culture within the business sector.
Actively foster compliance with OSHA and other applicable Federal, State, and Local health and safety regulatory requirements.
Ensure that sector health and safety certifications, accreditations, ratings, and compliance efforts are developed and continuously improved.
Conduct needs analyses and develop internal and program level H&S audit program to align H&S program with client and sector strategy, identifying and addressing any HS gaps or risks within a program and the sector business operations.
Chair sector H&S meetings, providing updates and recommendations to ensure that all reasonable and proper measures are taken to protect the safety and health of employees.
Conduct accident, injury, and near-miss investigations, and ensure that any near-miss and other safety or environmental incidents are properly reported, reviewed, and corrective action is taken.
Assure all accident, injury reports and near-misses are reported in iSMS and perform trend analaysis and develop proactive approaches based on trends and introduce those approaches in programs/projects and the energy business sector.
Coordinate the development and presentation of H&S training and continuing educational programs for technical and program staff.
Serve as the sector’s H&S representative/liaison to a variety of external entities including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Clients, Subcontractors, industry-related groups, and various government and community entities.
Maintain the relevance and integrity of H&S across all business lines and programs/projects.
Hands-on support to projects and proposals as a H&S consultant on request when available.
Maintain current knowledge of relevant H&S legal and other requirements (e.g. client, industry or WSP Global).
Monitor and where possible anticipate industry trends in best-practice H&S management to inform SHEQ resourcing and strategic decision making.
Maintain and continually improve induction and training programs for the business on a variety of H&S safety topics.
Collect, analyse and report on key H&S performance indicators predominantly through PowerBI, H&S reports, safety alerts and toolboxes.
Maintain integrity of H&S data within systems (iSMS, PowerBI)
Maintain and continually improve a robust competency management program to comply with client and industry requirements in collaboration with the learning and development team.
Provide oversight of all H&S observations, near misses, incidents and injury management cases, working in collaboration with the H&S advisors
Oversee injury management activities as required, including works compensation and advising on H&S related HR matters (e.g. mental health, legal claims).
Plan, coordinate and/or lead all incident investigations, and follow-up activities including senior leader reviews and corrective actions.
Oversees and manage accident investigation boards for the program and business sector.
Leadership of and accountability for administering and monitoring the sector’s medical surveillance program.
Manages and provides performance guidance and leadership to assigned H&S staff.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Bachelor’s Degree in Health & Safety Management, Industrial or Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Biology, or related discipline.
12+ years of corporate H&S management experience, Senior H&S senior manager or similar management role.
5+ years experience managing H&S on multi-billion dollar (USD) programs and mega projects (> 1 billion (USD).
Appropriate industry certifications.
Capable to design and implement successful change programs.
Preparation and delivery of various H&S training programs and facilitating workshops.
Managing a range of hazard management strategies across industries.
Leading incident management, root cause analysis and corrective action management.
Strong working knowledge of OSHA laws, regulations, and record-keeping requirements.
Demonstrated ability with establishing, implementing, and managing H&S programs, principles, practices, and policies for a line of business.
Experience with the implementation of OSHAS 18001 and ISO 45001 to include corporate audit.
Experience in managing the review of documents and preparation of H&S deliverables, certifications, processes, and plans in a multi-site environment or business sector is highly desirable.
Excellent leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
Strategic lateral thinking and strong analytical skills with attention to detail and prioritization of responsibilities in a pressure work environment.
Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including senior management, clients, and company-wide staff, including those with whom no formal hierarchical relationship exits.
Must be flexible to a variety of schedules to meet business needs and able to quickly adapt to change.
Advanced proficiency with office automation and communication software, technology, and tools used in the corporate environment.
Ability to travel 10 – 50% of the time.
Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
Master’s Degree is preferred.
