This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Environmental Engineer for our Herndon, Virginia office.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
The employee will manage complex environmental projects that involve field studies, report preparation, budget management, and interaction with coworkers, clients, subcontractors, and regulators.
Your Impact

Assist with the evaluation, selection, design, and implementation of air, soil, and groundwater remediation technologies, treatment of hazardous wastes, and site management and closure.
Oversee contractors conducting environmental remediation activities on project sites across the U.S.
Record, evaluate, and interpret data, prepare reports and work plans, and provide analysis and interpretations of findings based on scientific experimentation and existing knowledge. 
Read and follow corporate standard operating procedures for field and project development activities.  
Determine the proper methodology for environmental investigations at specific sites, perform the investigations, and evaluate results. 
Collect samples of environmental media, primarily soil, groundwater, and air at project sites across the U.S.  
Prepare environmental permit applications for air, water, and waste issues, including the implementation of remedial designs, and monitor compliance with permits.
Provide assistance in evaluation and compliance with environmental regulations such as CERCLA, RCRA, HSWA, and CWA.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering (civil, environmental, or chemical preferred).
3-5 years of environmental project experience. 
Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills with colleagues, clients, and management at all levels.
Ability to analyze and solve problems independently and as a team, using knowledge gained from increasing experience.
Must be able to work as a team member with people of differing backgrounds, technical areas, and experience levels.
Basic knowledge of environmental laws and regulations such as CERCLA, RCRA, HSWA, and CWA. 
Familiarity with task management, data evaluation, and report preparation is a plus.
Basic understanding of groundwater geochemistry and microbiology as they relate to in-situ remediation is preferred.
Ability to work overtime when necessary and travel frequently, and devote time to extended field assignments for oversight of remediation and monitoring activities.
Basic computer use and applications skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, and Adobe Acrobat.
Must be able to travel via air and land to project sites throughout the U.S.
Experience with hazardous waste investigation and remediation projects is a plus.
The ability to accumulate and share technical knowledge across a broad-spectrum audience of both technical and non-technical persons.
The ability to lift and transport up to 40 pounds of equipment or sample materials as periodically required on field assignments.
Must have a clean driving record and valid driver’s license, and be able to drive a company vehicle. 
Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
Must complete and pass 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER health and safety training, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) HAZMAT training, and First Aid and CPR training.
Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.
Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required.
Must be able to work in outdoor locations that feature rough terrain and be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy.  As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests.  A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Engineering (civil, environmental, or chemical preferred)
Certifications including Engineer-in-Training (EIT), OSHA HAZWOPER training (40-hour), DOT training, First Aid and CPR training desired
Field experience in environmental sampling
