This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geologist for our Herndon, Virginia office.  Be involved in projects with our Earth & Environment Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
The employee will manage environmental projects that involve field studies, report preparation, budget management, and interaction with coworkers, clients, subcontractors, and regulators.  
Projects will include groundwater, surface water, soil, and air sampling; environmental site assessments; regulatory permitting; subsurface site characterizations involving drilling, soil classification, and bedrock mapping; and hazardous waste site characterization and remediation.  The position requires travel and fieldwork.
Your Impact

Determine the proper methodology for environmental investigations at specific sites, perform the investigations, and evaluate results
Understand various regulatory environments and associated technical requirements
Read and follow corporate standard operating procedures for field and project development activities
Supervise, coordinate, and review/evaluate activities carried out by junior geologists and scientists
Prepare proposals (scope, schedule, and budget)
Assist with junior staff mentoring, and team planning and development
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Geology
P.G. Certification or ability to successfully pass P.G. exam within several years after hire
3 to 5 years of environmental project experience, including project management, proposal writing, client contact, and regulatory interaction
Strong geology technical knowledge and the passion and desire to excel
Experience with hazardous waste investigation and remediation projects is a plus
The ability to accumulate and share technical knowledge across a broad-spectrum audience of both technical and non-technical persons
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to function effectively as a team member
Basic computer use and applications skills, including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, and Adobe Acrobat
The ability to lift and transport up to 40 pounds of equipment or sample materials as periodically required on field assignments
Must have a clean driving record and valid driver’s license, and be able to drive a company vehicle 
Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening
Must have a willingness to travel for field work as dictated by project demands which could be upwards of 75% of the time and periodically adjust personal schedules to meet project needs.  Must be willing to make trips on short notice, including to local sites, and travel via air or land.  Overnight travel is required.
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
Must complete and pass 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER health and safety training, U.S. Department of Transportation HAZMAT training, and first aid and CPR training
Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator
Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required
Must be able to work in outdoor locations that sometimes feature rough terrain and be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities
This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy.  As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests.  A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Geology is preferred
Certifications including Geologist-in-Training (GIT), P.G., OSHA HAZWOPER training (40-hour), DOT training, First Aid and CPR training desired  #LIAW-2
