WSP is currently initiating a search for a Mid-Level Traffic Engineer for our Baltimore, MD office. Be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.
Experience with traffic control device design in signing, pavement markings, signals, lighting, maintenance of traffic and ITS design.
Perform professional traffic engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, roadways, intersections, signage, signals, pavement markings, and transportation corridors to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits.
Assist in developing and designing innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer-term capital improvement projects and studies, that require coordination with authorities, sub-consultants, and clients.
Assist developing or incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users, transportation vehicles/systems, and incorporate future-ready solutions with traffic engineering design standards.
Work as an individual or as part of a cross-functional team of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects.
Assist with verifying the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on traffic engineering studies, capacity analyses, traffic complaint investigation, traffic plan review, signal system design, monitoring and control, and operations analysis to ensure roadways are designed in a safe and efficient way and the driver is provided with all of the necessary information and safety metrics to help ensure that their driving experience is safe and efficient.
Conduct traffic counts for roadways and intersections to determine the volume of traffic, where the traffic is going to and from, and the type of traffic on the roadway.
Determine appropriate signage, signals, and pavement markings along a new or existing road.
Assist in investigating accident data and determines if changes can be made to roadways or intersections to make it safer for all who use the roads
Initiate, direct, and apply the results of studies and program reviews in order to evaluate existing and projected transportation systems, traffic impacts of proposed developments, recommending traffic safety enhancement projects on the basis of respective studies.
Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
Contribute to the preparation of technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve, prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or problems.
Remain current in latest traffic engineering techniques and practices.
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
Minimum of 3+ years of relevant post education experience in engineering and prior traffic design experience.
EIT registration, or ability to obtain within 6 months
Prior demonstrated knowledge and experience with DOT advisory circulars and procedures.
Proficient knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices, process, and design/build related to traffic control equipment, capacity and operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
Working knowledge of relevant roadway transportation construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
Ability to make technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
Hands-on experience with CADD software, including the most recent version of MicroStation and traffic engineering software such as GuideSign, HCS, Synchro/Sim Traffic, VISSIM and ArcGIS
Proficiency with technical writing and office automation skills.
Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, statistical analysis and arriving at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
Master’s Degree in Engineering.
